Hinge Review 2026: Honest Rating & Expert Verdict
Serious relationships, 25–45
Quick Verdict
Hinge is the best dating app for singles who want a genuine relationship in 2026. Its prompt-based profiles encourage real conversation, and Hinge says daters are eight times more likely to have a great date with their Most Compatible suggestions. The free version is usable but limited to 8 likes per day — upgrading to Hinge+ (£29.99/month) or HingeX (£49.99/month) makes a meaningful difference in busy markets. If you are serious about finding a partner and willing to invest time in a thoughtful profile, Hinge is our top recommendation.

What Is Hinge?
Hinge is a relationship-focused dating app owned by Match Group, first launched in 2012 and fully redesigned in 2016 around its now-signature prompt-based profile format. Hinge markets itself as the app "designed to be deleted" — a direct statement that its goal is to get you into a relationship and off the platform. Unlike swipe-heavy competitors such as Tinder, Hinge requires users to engage with specific photos, voice notes, or written prompts rather than making a blanket yes-or-no decision. Match Group does not give a Hinge user total in its latest results, but said Hinge's revenue grew 22% and its global monthly active users rose 13% year on year in the second quarter of 2026. In December 2025 founder Justin McLeod stepped down as chief executive to launch Overtone, a new venture backed by Match Group, and Jackie Jantos, previously Hinge's president and chief marketing officer, became CEO. Hinge is headquartered in New York City and is available on iOS and Android.

What We Like
- Prompt-based profiles spark genuine conversation
commenting on a specific answer is infinitely better than a generic opening message, and it shows
- Most Compatible algorithm actually works
Hinge says you are eight times more likely to have a great date with your Most Compatible suggestions, which is the company's own figure
- Relationship-focused user base
the app is built around relationships rather than casual swiping, which suits people looking for commitment
- Strong free tier
unlimited messaging and the core matching features are available without paying
- Voice and video prompts
hear and see your potential match before meeting, reducing catfishing risk
- We Met feedback loop
a few days after you swap numbers, Hinge asks whether you went on a date and takes your answer into account when recommending new people
- AI-powered profile assistance
helpful for users who struggle to present themselves, though best used as a starting point rather than a crutch
What Could Be Better
- 8 daily likes on free tier is restrictive
in busy markets, this runs out quickly and forces you to either pay or wait
- No web version
desktop users are out of luck; Hinge is mobile-only
- Premium is expensive and prices vary
Hinge's terms say pricing varies based on a number of factors, and promotional rates can vary by region, plan length, bundle size, past purchases and account activity
- AI homogenisation risk
as more users rely on AI-suggested prompts, profiles can start to feel formulaic
- Unanswered chats can pause your likes
with Your Turn Limits, once too many matches are waiting for your reply you cannot send or receive new likes until you reply to or end a conversation
- Smaller pool in rural areas
if you are outside a major city, you may exhaust your local matches relatively quickly
Features & Functionality
Hinge's feature set in 2026 is built around one principle: making every interaction feel intentional. Where Tinder reduces a person to a swipe, Hinge forces you to slow down and engage with something specific about their profile.
The core mechanic is the prompt system. Every profile includes six photos and three written prompts chosen from a rotating library — questions like "A life goal of mine," "The hallmark of a good relationship is," or "Together we could." When you want to express interest, you tap the heart icon on a specific photo or prompt and leave a comment. This means your opening message already has context. Hinge says likes sent with a comment are twice as likely to lead to a date.
The Most Compatible feature is Hinge's algorithmic crown jewel. Each day, the app suggests people it believes you are most likely to get on with, based on your activity in the app. Hinge says you are eight times more likely to have a great date with your Most Compatible suggestions. The algorithm also draws on Hinge's We Met feature: a few days after you exchange phone numbers, Hinge asks whether you went on a date and whether you would like to see that person again, and it considers your answer when recommending new people.
Hinge has added AI tools that give tips rather than writing for you. Prompt Feedback (launched January 2025) suggests ways to make your prompt answers more personal, and Convo Starters (US from December 2025, UK from February 2026) offers three tips based on a specific photo or prompt when you send a like. You still write your own message, and Convo Starters can be switched off in settings. These tools are helpful for users who struggle with self-presentation, though there is a risk of profiles starting to feel formulaic if everyone relies on the same suggestions.
Other notable features include voice prompts (short audio clips that showcase personality), video prompts, Your Turn Limits (once too many matches are waiting for your reply, you cannot send or receive new likes until you reply to or end a conversation), Friend's Take (launched July 2026 in all markets except India, it lets friends and family answer a prompt about you, and you choose up to three answers to show on your profile), and Roses, which put your like at the top of the other person's Likes You screen. Every member gets one free Rose a week, and more can be bought in batches of 3, 12 or 50.
Pricing & Plans
Hinge operates on a three-tier model. The free version is surprisingly functional — you can create a full profile, send and receive unlimited messages, and use the Most Compatible feature. However, you are limited to 8 likes per day, which in busy markets like London or New York can feel restrictive.
| Plan | Monthly Cost | Key Features |
|---|---|---|
| Free | £0 | 8 likes/day, unlimited messaging, Most Compatible, We Met |
| Hinge+ | £29.99/month (or £14.99/month on 6-month plan) | Unlimited likes, see who liked you, advanced filters (education, politics, family plans) |
| HingeX | £49.99/month (or £24.99/month on 6-month plan) | All Hinge+ features + Priority Likes, an always-on visibility boost, compatible people shown sooner |
Hinge's terms say pricing varies based on a number of factors, and promotional rates can vary by region, length of subscription, bundle size, past purchases and account activity. Plans are sold weekly, monthly, for three months or for six months, and all renew automatically. Multi-month commitments offer significant savings: the 6-month Hinge+ plan works out to roughly half the monthly price of the rolling subscription.
Is the premium worth it? For serious daters in high-density cities, Hinge+ is a solid investment. Unlimited likes alone remove the biggest frustration of the free tier. HingeX is harder to justify unless you are in a highly competitive market and want maximum visibility. For users in smaller towns, the free version is often sufficient since you are less likely to exhaust your daily likes.

User Base & Demographics
Hinge's user base skews toward the relationship-seeking end of the spectrum. The app is designed around dating with intent rather than casual swiping, which is its main appeal if you are looking for commitment.
Hinge says Gen Z is now its largest audience globally, though the app is also used by older daters. Hinge is particularly popular among urban professionals in major cities — New York, London, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, and Manchester all have large, active user pools. In smaller cities and rural areas, the experience can be thinner, and you may find yourself running out of profiles to view.
Gender balance on Hinge is relatively even compared to competitors — the app's relationship-forward positioning attracts women who are less interested in the casual dynamics that can dominate apps like Tinder. In its second-quarter 2026 results, Match Group said Hinge's global monthly active users were up 13% year on year.
For users over 40, Hinge can still work well, though you may find a smaller pool of matches in your age range compared to platforms specifically targeting older demographics. If you are in this bracket, see our Dating Over 50 guide and our Smooch review for alternatives purpose-built for second-chapter daters.
User Experience & Design
Hinge's interface is clean, modern, and deliberately paced. The vertical scrolling format — where you move through one full profile at a time rather than rapidly swiping through photos — encourages you to actually read prompts and look at photos before making a decision. This design choice is central to Hinge's identity.
Profile creation is more involved than on most competitors. You must upload at least six photos and answer three prompts before your profile goes live — there is no skipping straight to browsing. This creates a higher barrier to entry, which filters out low-effort users and results in a generally more engaged community.
The app is mobile-only (iOS and Android), with no web version available.
Navigation is straightforward: Discover (browse matches), Likes (see who liked you — full list for premium users), and Messages. The settings let you adjust distance, age range and other preferences, and Hinge+ adds advanced filters for height, children, family plans, education level, politics, drinking, smoking, marijuana and drug use.
Safety & Moderation
Hinge uses AI tools to cut down harmful messages. Are You Sure? asks you to think again before sending a message that could be seen as offensive, Did This Bother You? asks for feedback on flagged messages, and the Comment Filter hides likes with comments containing words you choose (AI-powered filtering was added in March 2025). Since September 2025, when content breaks the rules Hinge removes only that content and tells the user what was flagged and why.
Key safety features include Face Check, a video selfie scan that Hinge requires where it has been rolled out and local rules allow. It checks you are a real, live person, estimates your age, compares your face with your profile photos (a match earns a Selfie Verified badge) and looks for your face on other accounts. There are also block and report tools, and We Met lets you report a date who was disrespectful.
Hinge's privacy approach is standard for a Match Group app: the platform collects usage data including features used, messages sent, and personal details like age and location. Some data, in anonymised form, may be shared with Match Group affiliates and third-party advertising partners. Hinge's privacy policy (effective 24 November 2025) says it keeps some data for three months after an account is closed for safety reasons (up to two years after a ban), and some records for longer, such as transaction data for 10 years. Face Check data is deleted within 30 days unless it is needed for legal or safety reasons.

Mobile App
Hinge is exclusively a mobile app — there is no desktop or web version. The iOS and Android apps are functionally identical, with a clean design that prioritises one-profile-at-a-time browsing. On iPhone you can pay through Hinge's own payment system (processed by Stripe) or through the App Store; on Android, subscriptions go through Google Play. Where you paid matters when you cancel (see the FAQs below).
Hinge regularly adds features, most recently Friend's Take in July 2026, so the app you download may differ from older guides.

Choose Hinge if…
- You want a serious relationship
Hinge's entire design — from the prompt system to the We Met feedback — is engineered for people seeking genuine connections, not casual scrolling.
- You are willing to invest time in your profile
The six-photo, three-prompt requirement rewards effort. If you put thought into your answers, you will attract higher-quality matches.
- You live in a major city
London, New York, LA, Chicago, Manchester, San Francisco — Hinge's user base is strongest in urban centres where the pool of relationship-seeking professionals is deepest.
- You value conversation quality over volume
If you are tired of empty matches and one-word replies, Hinge's format naturally produces better conversations than any swipe-based alternative.
Consider alternatives if…
- You prefer a massive user pool
Tinder still has more users overall, especially in the under-25 demographic. See our Tinder vs Hinge comparison.
- You want a completely free experience
While Hinge's free tier is functional, the 8-like limit is frustrating. OkCupid offers more generous free features.
- You are in a rural area
The user density may not be sufficient outside major metro areas. Consider a platform with a broader geographic reach like Match.com.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Hinge free?
Yes. Hinge's free tier includes profile creation, 8 likes per day, messaging with your matches, Most Compatible suggestions, one free Rose a week and one Undo Skip a week. Free members see incoming likes one at a time. However, premium features like unlimited likes, seeing who liked you, and advanced filters require a Hinge+ or HingeX subscription.
Is Hinge safe?
Hinge is one of the safer mainstream dating apps. It uses AI tools to flag potentially offensive messages, requires a Face Check video selfie where this has been rolled out, gives matching profiles a Selfie Verified badge, and provides block and report tools. You can also report a disrespectful date through the We Met feature. As with any dating platform, exercise standard caution — see our safety guide for tips.
Who is Hinge best for?
Hinge is ideal for singles aged 25–45 who are looking for serious, committed relationships and are willing to invest time in creating a thoughtful profile. It works best in major cities with large user pools. If you want casual dating or maximum volume, Tinder or Bumble may be better fits.
How does Hinge compare to Bumble?
Both are strong apps for relationship-seeking users, but they differ in key ways. Since August 2026 either person can message first on Bumble, but each person gets only one opening message until the other replies. Hinge's prompt system generally produces better opening conversations. Bumble also offers BFF for finding friends, which Hinge lacks. For a detailed breakdown, see our Hinge vs Bumble comparison.
How does Hinge compare to Tinder?
Hinge is built for relationships; Tinder is optimised for volume and speed. Hinge's prompt-based profiles and Most Compatible algorithm produce higher-quality matches, while Tinder's larger user base gives you more options, particularly in the 18–25 age range. See our Tinder vs Hinge comparison for the full breakdown.
Is Hinge+ worth paying for?
For serious daters in major cities, Hinge+ is worth considering. Unlimited likes remove the biggest free-tier frustration, and seeing who liked you is a genuine time-saver. The 6-month plan at approximately £14.99/month offers the best value. HingeX at £49.99/month is harder to justify unless you want maximum visibility in a very competitive market.
Can you use Hinge on desktop?
No. Hinge is exclusively a mobile app, available on iOS and Android. There is no web or desktop version.
Does Hinge work for over 40s?
Hinge can work for users over 40, particularly in large cities where the user base is diverse. However, the core demographic is 25–45, and users over 50 may find a relatively small pool of age-appropriate matches. For a platform specifically designed for older daters, see our reviews of Smooch and OurTime.
How do I cancel Hinge+ or HingeX?
It depends on how you paid. If you subscribed with Hinge payment (processed by Stripe), open the app, tap your photo icon, then the gear icon, tap Cancel Subscription and follow the prompts. If you paid through the App Store, cancel in your Apple subscription settings; if you paid through Google Play, cancel in Google Play's subscriptions page. Cancel at least 24 hours before the next billing date to stop it renewing. Deleting the app does not cancel any subscription, and deleting your Hinge account does not cancel an App Store or Google Play subscription.
How do I delete my Hinge account?
Open the app, tap your profile photo icon, tap the gear icon to open Account Settings, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account, then follow the prompts. Uninstalling the app does not delete your account. If you pay through the App Store or Google Play, cancel that subscription separately, because deleting your account will not stop it. If you pay through Hinge payment, deleting your account cancels the subscription straight away and you lose any remaining time.
